Let's End TB in Nunavik

World TB Day QuizIn recent years, there has been an increase in the number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Nunavik.

The rate of TB among Inuit living in Nunavik is anywhere between 100 to 300 times higher than that in the rest of Québec. Over the last 10 years, nearly all of the 14 Nunavik communities reported cases of TB.

Every effort is being undertaken to prevent the disease from spreading.

The number of active TB cases in Nunavik declined between 1980 and 2003. However, the incidence rate has risen since 2007 and major outbreaks have occurred.

Several reasons can explain the resurgence in the number of active TB cases in Nunavik, including social factors such as overcrowded housing, malnutrition, poverty, and alcohol/drug abuse. Even a poorly ventilated room where people meet regularly, such as gathering houses, can suddenly become a highly contagious location for the disease to spread.

The Public Health Department of the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS) has initiated a communication strategy aimed at informing Nunavimmiut about TB.
